Typography Programmes

The Penrith Museum of Printing is proud to announce the continuation and further development of its popular typography programmes in 2009.

Typography is defined as "the art or process of setting and arranging types and printing from them".

Next available "Typography 1" course dates:

Saturday 18 July, 2009
Sunday  26 July, 2009
Sunday 6 September, 2009

Next "Typography 2" course date:  to be advised.

Our Typography classes are being run to give those interested in the art of printing and or graphic design a greater understanding of the craft of the compositor of old.

These typography classes give participants a practical hands-on experience of the pre-computer age world of letterpress printing using handset types, composing sticks, line guages, galleys, quoins and more.

The Typography 2 course builds on the skills developed in typography 1 and involves participants working with a variety of smaller fonts and blocks to produce an invitation card or similar. Participants will also learn how to space their work using leads and wooden furniture and then "lockup"  their work in a chase and then proof their work on one of our hand operated presses.

Why don't you come and give it a try ?

A new printing press operation course is planned for later in the year. If this course appeals to you, then please contact us for details. (see below).
