The Penrith Museum of Printing is back open
GOOD NEWS --- WE'RE BACK !
After several months of being closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the museum has finally re-opened to the public. The museum went through a thorough deep clean and general tidy-up before re-opening and has as per regulations formulated a Covid-safe plan. Hand sanitising is available as is the 1.5 metre spacing.
The museum opened on Sunday, 28th June to a large number of visitors, all keen to get out and about again, after self-isolating and for a short time will open each Saturday and Sunday.
After some four months self-isolating, the volunteers are also keen to "get back to it" and welcome the opportunity to show visitors the letterpress printing process using equipment from the early 1840's thought to more recent times, the mid 1950's.
On display will be a selection of hand-set type and very early type-setting machines, printing on a Gutenberg inspired press, built in 1841's to a 1960's Heidelberg
Latest from the Penrith Museum of Printing
Life around Penrith Museum of Printing sure has been interesting over the last 6 months with COVID.
A great deal of work has been completed by the members since June when lockdown eased, people were venturing out. We have seen nearly 90 visitors through the doors since July and 2 courses held all under strict COVID procedures.
What a great response under the circumstances which has no doubt been helped by our recent enlarged digital presence, which includes Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, where we are developing quite a following crowd.
The daily uploads have created a fair amount of interest from people around the world as well. Also, interesting to note is the number of visitors from tour groups over the last couple of years has been growing. Nearly 1300 happy visitors from all places like Picton, Erskine Park, Padstow, Wentworthville, Holroyd, Gordon, Leichhardt, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Kiama, Pennant Hills plus many others, what a great spread across the Greater Sydney basin.
Our proximity to the Railway, excellent parking and access for all plus the Paceway Club facilities add a real treat. Your visit can then include the Nepean River cafe precent and Panthers Leagues plus Westfield Shopping Centre all within 2km. Venture up the hill for some of the best views in the world at Katoomba and Leura.
The Museum has a new addition which will be delivered in the coming weeks which is a Model 78 Linotype ex Kiama Independent thanks to John Weston. We are reorganizing the bank of Linotypes for our new addition and with the revamped floor plan our visitors will be able to wander through the Composing Room and try their luck at Hand setting, and gain a real feel for how the printed word was prepared for printing from the 1400's. A real treat for just about anyone and any age. We are always keen to welcome new members and of course our tours can be held for your organisation at almost any time by appointment. Check the webpages for all the information on courses, tours and opening times or just give us a call.
